About Us
Founded in 1973, the Arc of DeKalb County is a 501c3 non-profit organization that strives to provide organized, meaningful habilitative training through Residential, Community and Day Program Services. This non-profit organization was conceptualized when one DeKalb County family recognized the need for disability supports and services in our area. In the 1980's, we began providing Adult Day Program Services and in 1997, Residential Services became available. In addition, we currently provide Day Habilitation, Pre-Vocational Training, and countless recreational, volunteer, and community activities.
The Arc of DeKalb County is one of the 29 local chapters across Alabama whose primary role is to advocate for the rights and protections of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families. As a chapter of The Arc of Alabama, Inc., we hold to the motto: “Working to include all individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their communities.” The Arc of Alabama, Inc. is affiliated with The Arc of the United States, the largest organization in the United States devoted solely to working on behalf of people with developmental disabilities. Each local chapter is a unique non-profit organization whose goal is to foster community involvement and inclusion for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This can be accomplished by increasing awareness, creating fundraising initiatives, providing a variety of supports and services, volunteering within the community, promoting events, cultivating activities, and so on.
